You can shine and stand out from the crowd in an interview if you get your job interview prep right. I will tell you what you need to do to make sure that you have the best chance of getting any job you apply for.
First it pays to understand what your potential employer is looking for. If they have a website it will be very easy for you to pick out what their unique selling point is. It might be quality of their product or the best customer service or it might be the fact that they are the cheapest or the fastest or the most effective. Whatever it is, if you understand it and weave it into your answers then you will have a head start on your completion and subliminally appeal to the interviewer.
Learn as much as you can about how your potential employer operates and think about what skills and experience you have that would benefit them. It is no use going into an interview and talking about your excellent customer service skills when most of the work is not customer facing. This might sound obvious but you would be surprised how many people let themselves down by not having a thorough understanding of a company's line of business.
A great tip is to experience for yourself what the company has to offer and how it operates so that you can show that you genuinely want to work for this particular employer as opposed to just getting a job. Any employer will be more attracted to someone who is keen to join the company because they believe they offer a good service or product. So you can mention that you were in the store last week and you noticed how friendly all the staff were, or that you bought their product last year and were impressed by the quality of it.
Don't go overboard, you don't want to appear sycophantic but you do want to let the employer know that you know what you are talking about. It also pays to ask some questions if you are given the opportunity. Try to use this time wisely and ask about career prospects and training. This will show that you are keen to develop yourself and not just interested in the wage.
